5 Remote Desktop Sessions with 1 Virtual Machine
More is also possible.
According to Microsoft, you need Azure to run multiple sessions on 1 VM.
But with some adjustments it can be done with 1 VM without Azure.

Azure and Onedrive for Bussines


You can sign up for a 1-month trial version.
But that is not recommended because of problems with unsubscribe and possibly incur the costs of that OneDrive.
Read on before you do anything.
You need a Visa card for that.
You are asked how many users of 4.20 euro you want to register.
1 is enough, because you can enter up to 25 users in the trial version anyway.
No money is deducted during the trial period.
But they are like civil servants.
They don't lie, they just don't tell you everything.
You have to unsubscribe at the end of that trial month, but don't be surprised if your Visa card is still charged.
Read the instructions for unsubscribing.
And make and save print screens.
Once you have gone through those steps you can enter the users.

Then you get mails with temporary passwords that you can forward to the users.
They can then click the get started button to enter a personal password.
After that you will go through a few more steps and you can choose to have an email sent to the users for an introduction and to sign up for Teams.
It is therefore recommended that when creating the users, they enter their own email address.

What failed with Onedrive for private users is now possible.
The idea is that the administrator is the boss and the employees become co-users.
With the normal Onedrive for private users, the user remains the private owner.
They can share files with others, who can view and modify files, but they cannot add/upload files.
You shouldn't want to do that.
Private is private.
With Onedrive for Business you pay for a separate room in the M$ data center.
That's where the business OneDrives for each client are placed.
And even though users have passwords that the administrator doesn't know, those OneDrives are still accessible by the administrator.

   

There is also an option to have Onedrive sync with a folder on the computer.
There's a lot to worry about that Online files are hard to find, you have to click a lot to get there via a browser, and it's hard to drag between folders.
The sync button (at the top of the menu bar) solves this problem.

You only have to click this button once and from then on all folders and files in your OneDrive are also synchronized on your local pc or laptop.

From then on, you don't actually need to work Online anymore but just save and edit in the local OneDrive found in your Windows Explorer.
Note: Do not confuse this Business OneDrive with the private OneDrive that is linked to your own Microsoft account.
You will get your own Onedrive for Bussines account with a username and password.

In the end, you'll end up with the following setup.



Microsoft states that with Azure, you can deploy multiple virtual desktops for the clients with 1 virtual Machine (VM) over a secure connection (VPN)

Without Azure, you would have to use a computer with its own VM for each client.
This is indicated by M$.
The files are stored in Onedrive.
And that Onedrive is in the corporate group managed by the administrator.

This is the fixed setup at an office.
A client has a shared folder on the computer and it syncs with a shared folder on the server.


But to test it out, we would rather not use Azure and Ondrive because of the high costs.
We want to create separate business OneDrives for all staff members, which will then also all be accessible by the administrator.
Below is what we would actually like.


How can you make that happen?
You've already worked with thin clients.
You had 1 computer with 2 additional created accounts, and with a so-called wrapper and changing the settings you finally managed to get the desktops of those accounts on multiple screens via a Remote Desktop Session.

We're going to repeat that joke with Hyper V.
You're going to install Hyper V.
Once Hyper V is up and running you're going to install a Windows 10 version in that VM.
But then the DVD with the Pro version 1607.

On a PC or laptop (no server) it only works with Windows 10 Pro.
With a Home version you need to upgrade to Pro.

Starting Hyper-V
At start in the list search for Windows administrative tools and then click on Hyper-V manager


Click on start

A little later you'll see a picture of that VM at the bottom left and you'll click on that.


No internet on the virtual machine?
Go to the server's internet adapters and in properties, see if Network IPv6 is checked.
Uncheck that for all adapters.



Turn off the firewall.
Start virtual machine and uncheck IPv6 of the virtual adapter there as well.
Still no internet?
Start hyper V manager.
And right click on virtual switch
Here you see that controller #2 is set, but you also have the option to assign another one.
You must therefore use a different adapter than the one currently configured.
In this case the correct WAN network card in the computer.
It comes down to switching the available network cards



If you choose the right card you should have internet on the VM

The setup is as follows.
Server 2019 running Hyper V and in that virtual machine running a W10 version.
Initially, the latest version was made into a bootable USB stick with the Media Creation Tool and then installed.
But for that version we could not find a working wrapper to activate additional accounts.
There are some solutions on the internet such as at You Tube, but they didn't work well (yet).

For Windows 10, therefore, version 1607 was used and with the accompanying wrapper it did work.

Download the tool with which you can then connect to the Win-10 ISO download site.
You will immediately be offered the latest version, but you can then choose which one you want.

Create 2 additional accounts, as you did with those thin clients, and install Wrapper 6.1 (1607)
Download wrapper and the manual from the thin clients.
Change the name of the computer, but you don't have to, and use regular names for those extra accounts.




Now Windows has the annoying habit of releasing an upgrade every 6 months and then that wrapper no longer works.
You now have 1607 with the wrapper that goes with it and when you upgrade you should look for a custom wrapper.
The first thing you do if that VM works is go to updates in that VM and choose advanced and check the block feature updates box.
If that version is upgraded then you can revert that.
Before an upgrade is installed windows makes a copy of the existing installation and saves it as a Windows Old file.
You have 30 days to reverse this.
It goes like this.
You start that updated VM whose wrapper no longer works.
As soon as you see Windows 10 running you force a shut down of that VM.
You do that a few times in a row until you see the message.
"wait"
Then you come to the troubleshooting screen and you can restore that previous version.
Using the Windows shutup tool may also help.
But you can also hide an upgrade with the Windows Show-hide tool if it presents itself.



With that VM installation, you then need to create additional accounts like you did with those thin clients with administrator rights (not default) and a password.
The challenge was to be able to connect outside that frame of that VM to a remote computer.
That desktop outside the server domain was connected to the general network (WAN).
From that PC, I managed to pull the desktop of that additional account there.

 

And the other way around works too.
That the desktop of that remote desktop is pulled into that VM.
Actually a kind of teamviewer.
If you want to start such a reverse session, there must be a password on that external machine.
Since it was successful to connect to that VM from outside that domain, via the WAN, it should also be possible from home via a VPN.

 

Using the wrapper technique for (thin) clients, we finally managed to activate 5 accounts with 1 VM on different computers





Bert and Ernie were added to the domain as users.
But for this setup they were removed from the domain by putting them back in the Workgroup as a normal stand alone machine.

With this system you no longer need a LAN
A server has an incoming WAN and an outgoing LAN to the client
That means 2 internet connections.
Incoming and outgoing.
That
makes it difficult on a laptop, because you only have 1 connection.
Now you can run a VM in Windows 10 and still roll out a virtual desktop to other computers with a WAN.
 

Starting a Remote Desktop Session.
You can start a session from that VM from all computers on the wired network.

hen network detection and sharing must be enabled and a remote connection must be allowed.
Right click on C and choose expand.

Click on network at the bottom left .
Then you should see the name of the PC/server or laptop with the VM.
Right click on it and start a remote desktop session.
Then you can log into an account of that VM with a username and password.





Manage OneDrives.
Create a G-mail account for each client as administrator of that VM and then connect to the Onedrive in the documents folder of that account with G-mail with your phone number as administrator, which you then have to confirm via your phone.
In fact, you already have administrator access for each client.
You can also attach mail addresses to the company's own website.

Then you can access the various OneDrives in that VM but not copy the contents to a folder on the Server.
This can be solved as follows.
Create a folder on that server MyOneDrive or something.
And there you create a subfolder for each client.
You start a VM session with the administrator on another computer in the network connected to the Wan.
You can then access the contents of each OneDrive and copy it there.
Although being able to access any Onedrive from the administrator was the objective.
With that, you have achieved the same thing that Onedrive for Bussines has.



Now to figure out how to get those folders to sync with their OneDrives.

And how to use a VPN connection and adjust the router settings.
